Tamang Studies

The second-semester course entitled "Tamang and Other Communities" elaborates on the basic overview of Tamang Studies. It follows a comparative and relational approach to the Tamang people in the diverse ethnic mosaic of Nepal and the Himalayas in order to understand them. The course engages beyond examining the Tamang historical, socio-economic, cultural, political, gendered, and social relations of neighbor and co-resident communities such as the Newar, Gurung, Magar, Sherpa, Hyolmo, Brahmin-Chhetri, and Dalit groups and diversity within the Tamang community: The dynamics of trade, migration, religious exchange, political alliance and conflict, social fabric, and cultural symbiosis are examined. Among the most essential goals is to examine ideas about identity, social inequality and hierarchy, and inter-ethnic relations in both historical and actual conditions, influenced by the formation and modernization processes and federal reforms.
